Sweatshirt Jacket Workshop

Saturday, May 15, 2010
Instructional Fee$10 (non-members $15)
Teacher: Ruth Skaggs
10:00 - 4:00 PM
Commerce Public Library

BASIC SUPPLIES:

  • Sweatshirt with set-in sleeves, preferably 80% cotton, 20% polyester (in a size that fits the person its being made for). When you buy the sweatshirt, lay it down and if it has side seams make sure they are straight and not twisted. The Fabric Cafe has a good selection of sweatshirts. I used one of their sweatshirts and their chenille (sold by the inch) to decorate my sweatshirt. This is their link: fabriccafe.com
  • Sewing Machine
  • Thread to match the sweatshirt
  • Thread to match fabric being used to decorate jacket. You can decorate the jacket any way you prefer to decorate it.
  • Fabric of choice sufficient to bind jacket bottom, ends of sleeves, lapels and **neckline (or ready made binding)
  • Rotary Cutter
  • Large & small cutting board with 1" grid lines (I will bring both sizes)
  • Long quilt ruler
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • 1/4" presser foot, open-toe presser foot and closed-to clear presser foot are helpful
  • Water-soluble fabric marker or chalk marker
  • Spray starch or other spray stabilizer

*After washing & drying sweatshirt, cut off the bottom band and cuffs using scissors and following the stitching line as closely as possible.
**Use seam ripper to cut off the neckband - DO NOT USE SCISSORS TO CUT OFF NECKBAND.
